CLS America has been a major partner with large international in-situ oceanographic and meteorological programs for the last 25 years. A U.S. subsidiary of the French-based Collecte Localisation Satellites (CLS), CLS America was originally established near Washington, DC, in order to provide operational services and end-user support for the joint French/USA Argos System, as well as to provide Argos-based services to a number of commercial users and non-environmental agencies throughout North America. As a data collection and geo-location system devoted to monitoring and protection of the Earth’s environment, Argos is deployed aboard 7 Polar-Orbiting Environmental Satellites, 5 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and 2 European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). Argos can locate any platform carrying a suitable transmitter, anywhere in the world, and collect data from sensors connected to that transmitter. Half of the Argos system capacity is currently used for meteorological and oceanographic operations and research. Much of the data collected from the more than 22,000 transmitters active today is relayed around the world via the World Meteorological Organization’s Global Telecommunications System (GTS). The Argos system enables increasingly lower power transmissions from the user’s platforms, higher data rates through the satellites, and the capability to dialog with the transmitter/platform device. Its enhancements enable the scientific community to satisfy increasingly difficult data relay needs with a proven, reliable, and robust data collection system as Argos continues its Earth observation and monitoring mission. Ocean moorings, drifting buoys, autonomous profiling floats and gliders are vital components of the in-situ ocean observing system networks. These platforms use the latest satellite technologies to transmit their data, receive commands and to be recovered at sea. They are typically fitted with Iridium and/or Argos modems with a dedicated battery source, as a back-up solution in case of emergency. In close partnership with the ocean and meteorological platform manufacturers, and through a worldwide network of offices and subsidiaries, CLS/CLS America offers an operational 24/7 one-stop-shopping capability for Argos and Iridium data communications and processing services for global scientific and operational organizations and programs.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Space Science and Engineering Center specializes in atmospheric science, satellite and spaceflight instrumentation, and scientific visualization. SSEC's atmospheric research is concentrated in its Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), a cooperative arrangement between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and NOAA and NASA. SSEC is known for developing high-spectral instrumentation and data processing techniques. Its Data Center archives geostationary and other satellite data in a global data set, augmented by a MODIS and Suomi/NPP direct broadcast facility through rooftop X-band antennae. Visualization developments include McIDAS-X, McIDAS-V and VisAD.
