25th Conference on Climate Variability and Change

      The theme for the 2013 AMS Annual Meeting is "Taking Predictions to the Next Level: Expanding Beyond Today's Weather, Water, and Climate Forecasting and Projections".  Over the past 60 years the meteorological community has made tremendous strides in making prediction a fundamental part of its scientific and operational/service heritage through the development and application of complex numerical models involving the atmosphere, ocean, land and cryosphere components of the Earth System. This theme will serve as a catalyst for the 2013 AMS annual meeting by focusing the attention of the research and operational communities, including those who are involved in accelerating the transition of research results into operations.  Furthermore, the increasing use of predictions by decision makers throughout federal, state, and local emergency management government agencies and by private/commercial sectors will serve as an important component for this annual meeting along with the extension of predictive capabilities into a broader domain, including public health, food security, air and water quality, alternative energy and responses to climate trends.

      Following this theme, the 25th Conference on Climate Variability and Change is soliciting papers on the following topics in addition to those on general aspects of climate variability and change:

               (1) Climate prediction from subseasonal to centennial timescales,

               (2) Application of climate prediction,

               (3) Changes in extremes (drought, floods, heat waves) under climate change,

               (4) Arctic and high latitude climate variability,

               (5) Tropical climate variability,

               (6) Teleconnections and climate modes,

               (7) Interaction among different climate components,

               (8) Detection and attribution of climate change, and

               (9) Model enhancements for improving predictions.

      Joint sessions are anticipated with the 15th Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry, the 8th Symposium on Policy and Socio-Economic Research, 19th Conference on Planned and Inadvertent Weather Modification, 11th Conference on Artificial and Computational Intelligence and its Applications to the Environmental Sciences, 27th Conference on Hydrology, 11th Symposium on Coastal Environment, and the Symposium on Prediction of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO).

      Additionally the Committee on Climate Variability and Change will conduct a student poster competition for students who enter when they submit their abstracts. Students must be the first author of the poster and presenting their own, original work.
