For the 2017 meeting, the Symposium is soliciting papers and posters on all aspects of university, K-12, formal, and informal education. This year, abstracts can be submitted for sessions with the following themes, including submissions for jointly sponsored sessions:
Pre-College Education Initiatives
University Education Initiatives
Outreach and Broader Impacts
Innovative Teaching Strategies in University Instruction focused on Atmospheric Physics
Continuing the successful tradition in past years’ sessions on Atmospheric Dynamics and Synoptic Meteorology, this year's session will focus on Atmospheric Physics at the undergraduate level. We encourage presentations involving thermodynamics, cloud physics, and radiation.
Partnerships for Promoting Diversity
We welcome presentations on programs that focus on partnering between universities, federal agencies, the public/private sector, or other groups to improve diversity in the workforce and AMS-related career fields.
Using Fieldwork (or Field Campaigns) to Create Experiential Learning Opportunities
We seek presentations about experiential learning opportunities created for students, especially undergraduates, in conjunction with fieldwork. Presenters could describe how they created internship opportunities during field campaigns, or undergraduate research activities involving fieldwork, or innovative ways to use observations and data collected in the field for classroom exercises.
Building Tomorrow's Atmospheric Science Workforce
We are particularly interested in research to understand workforce trends in our field as well as presentations of how we should best prepare students and postdocs for tomorrow's atmospheric science careers.
Findings from Education and Pedagogical Research
We are interested in sharing evaluation results and lessons learned from programs and classes that explore innovative teaching, pedagogy or research experiences.
Remote Sensing Education Experiences (Joint Session with 33rd Environmental Information Processing Technologies (EIPT))
From satellite imagery to pictures obtained by cameras on drones, kites or stationary posts; remotely sensed data is central to STEM education. This session explores the full gamut of recent remote sensing education initiatives.
Emergency Management: Education and Outreach to Better Prepare the Public (Joint Session)
Poster Session (open for all education, outreach, and broader impacts topics)
Please plan to join us for our AMS Symposium on Education Town Hall, scheduled just after the last formal education session on Tuesday afternoon during the annual meeting.
