AMS is commited to creating an environment for meetings that “embraces diversity through the inclusion of individuals across age, gender, race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, physical ability, marital status, sexual orientation, body shape or size, gender identity and expression, socioeconomic status, and other facets of social diversity” (see: https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/index.cfm/about-ams/diversity-and-inclusion-at-ams/).
The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is committed to, and benefits from the full and equitable participation of a diverse community in its membership, in its activities, and in the audiences that it serves.
This year we are celebrating the Annual Meeting theme "Understanding and Building Resilience to Extreme Events by Being Interdisciplinary, International, and Inclusive (III)" with several new activities. Meeting attendees will find that welcome signs are in the 12 most spoken languages of past AMS meetings; and we will have volunteers who speak more than one language serving at information booths and as AMS Beacons. Any meeting participant will be able to honor the languages they speak with a sticker for their badge, available at the registration desks. Exhibitor staff with multiple language skills are encouraged to participate. For attendees interested in bilingual science communication and outreach, there will be a session on “A Weather-Ready Nation for All: Bilingual Science Outreach/Communication and Supporting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community”.
In addition, the AMS continues already established services, including making accessibility accommodations according to the ADA and ensuring that gender neutral/family restrooms are available to meeting attendees. More information on these services can be found at
We invite all attendees to the following events:

The AMS has recently formed a Presidential Task Force on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) that is being led by Susan Avery. The goals of the task force are to 1) Assess the effectiveness of the AMS’s broadening participation efforts and to determine if the current activities provide an integrated and coherent plan moving forward.
2) Provide a strategic vision for D&I that could be integrated into the planning for the
Centennial meeting that is currently underway.
3) Suggest changes, including bold ones if needed, that would enhance D&I across the Society.
