Student Assistant Program

The Student Assistant Program is open to undergraduate students (sophomore year or higher), who are active AMS student members.  The program provides partial travel support to students willing to assist AMS staff in administering the annual meeting. Student assistants help with various tasks, including meeting registration, book/retail exhibit, committee meetings, and audio visual requirements. When students are not working, they have the opportunity to attend sessions and visit the exhibit area.  Students are not allowed to serve as a student assistant for more than two meetings.  Although the opportunity to be a student assistant is fun and educationally rewarding, it is also a demanding job and AMS takes this program very seriously!  We are looking for students that can work well with others, be depended upon, and are able and willing to take direction from AMS staff members. AMS provides student assistants with hotel accommodations (shared with one or two other students), meeting registration, and a small per diem to help offset daily meal expenses. Students must secure their own travel arrangements to and from Atlanta.  AMS does not cover travel costs.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students must be an AMS student member or full member with student privileges.  For current members, the 2014 membership dues must be renewed online no later than October 10th and prior to applying for a student assistant position.  If you are not a member and would like to apply for a student assistant position, you must submit an online membership application and pay for the full year of 2014.  Once the online application is properly submitted, you will be able to set up an account profile for access to the student assistant application within 24 hours, provided this is done prior to the deadline date.  Students must be referred by their academic advisor.  An electronic signature confirms that your advisor is aware and has referred you to apply for a Student Assistant position.  If you are selected for a Student Assistant position, you must be able to stay the full weekMembership renewals or new membership applications, sent by postal service, cannot process in timeAll interested candidates must use the online service as explained in these guidelines to be considered.  There are no allowances!  AMS is not responsible for applications that fail to transfer through.

Advisors will receive an automatic email of notification once the application is submitted.  Applications will be reviewed and selected after the deadline date.  There are a variety of components considered for various reasons when reviewing the information provided on the application. We will accept up to four students from any one school (unless the number of assistants needed is not met).  Applications will be accepted until the designated number of assistant slots is filled; a waiting list will be established after that time in the case a student withdraws his/her selection.

The 13th Annual WeatherFest will be held Sunday, 2 February 2014 from noon until 4:00p.m.  WeatherFest is an interactive four-hour science and weather fair free to the public.  WeatherFest Features weather demonstrations, hands-on weather and climate related activities and more.  A number of student assistants will be scheduled to work at this exhibit.  Those who are not scheduled to work during these hours are invited to attend the event.  Further information can be found at the following web site http://annual.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/2014/weatherfest/

Interested students should complete the online application form and submit it no later than midnight on deadline passed.  Applications will not be accepted after the deadline!  There are no exceptions to this rule, i.e. a student says he/she recently heard about the program.
