The 10th Annual Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R) Symposium Committee, will be held on 2-6 February 2014, in conjunction with of the 94th
The theme for the 2014 AMS Annual Meeting is “Extreme Weather—Climate and the Built Environment: New perspectives, opportunities, and tools.” Herein, we broadly define weather and climate extreme events to include, but not be limited to, severe storms, tornados, tropical cyclones, floods, winter storms, drought, temperature extremes, derechos, aircraft turbulence, wildfires, extreme solar activity, and ocean-land responses (e.g. storm surges, landslides, debris flows). Our society is a “built environment,” increasingly connected by cyber, energy, water, transportation, health, social, and other infrastructures—one that interacts with the natural environment through ecosystem functions supplied by wetlands, barrier islands, etc. The sustainability of this built environment and stewardship of our natural ecosystems are clearly related to quality of life. The theme is designed to explore the aforementioned “focal point” combining scientific inquiry, technological advances, societal implications, and public awareness through the lens of past, current, and future extreme weather and climate events.
The symposium will consist of oral and poster presentations with emphasis on how Suomi NPP, JPSS, GOES-R and other new generation operational environmental satellite systems have and will enhance our nation’s ability to observe, predict, and communicate weather and climate data at a new level of fidelity and timeliness. The symposium addresses capabilities of these new generation satellite systems to improve weather, climate, and other environmental data products; enhance user application and services, and blend and fuse satellite data from multiple sources. These enhanced data products will help civil and emergency personnel better prepare for extreme environmental events in order to save lives and property and to mitigate storm damage. The $95 abstract fee includes the submission of your abstract, the posting of your extended abstract, and the uploading and recording of your presentation which will be archived on the AMS Web site.
Please submit your abstract electronically via the Web by 26 August 2013 (refer to the AMS Web page at http://www.ametsoc.org/meet/online_submit.html). An abstract fee of $95 (payable by credit card or purchase order) is charged at the time of submission (refundable only if abstract is not accepted).
Authors of accepted presentations will be notified via e-mail by late-September 2013. All extended abstracts are to be submitted electronically and will be available on-line via the Web. Instructions for formatting extended abstracts will be posted on the AMS Web site. Manuscripts (up to 10 MB) must be submitted electronically by 6 March 2014. All abstracts, extended abstracts and presentations will be available on the AMS Web site at no cost.
Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best undergraduate and graduate student oral and poster presentations at the conference. There will be awards for first place ($200), second place ($150), and third place ($100). Awards will be given separately for oral and poster presentations.
