Major Weather Events and Societal Impacts of 2013

Call for Papers

The theme for the 2014 AMS Annual Meeting is “Extreme Weather—Climate and

the Built Environment: New perspectives, opportunities, and tools.”  The Major Weather Events and Societal Impacts of 2013 session is a one day session that specifically focuses on the following:

  • How did significant weather or climate events in 2013 impact society?
  • What were the economic losses or gains in 2013 that occurred due to significant weather events?
  • What new techniques, tools and procedures helped warn the public in 2013?
  • How did communication improve the outcome of a significant weather event in 2013?

The weather and climate extreme events of 2013 should include, but not be limited to, severe storms, tornados, tropical cyclones, floods, winter storms, drought, temperature extremes, derechos, aircraft turbulence, wildfires, extreme solar activity, and ocean-land responses (e.g. storm surges, landslides, debris flows).   A brief meteorological review of the event is permissible, but the content should mostly focus on the actual societal impacts, and newer tools that improve the forecast and dissemination of information in a major event.

While the session does have invited speakers, submitted abstracts will be accepted through Deadline Passed.  Authors are encouraged to contact the chairperson prior to submission for agenda planning purposes.  Two of the session themes generally include Global and US Weather Impacts, and opportunities exist as major events occur to create two other themed sessions during the day as well.  Past themes have included a Special Session on Hurricane Sandy, a Special Session on the Tornadoes of 2011, and sessions on Significant Floods, Heat and Drought, Decision Support during Major Events, Urban Weather Events, Weather and Transportation Impacts, Marine Weather Events and Weather and Health Impacts.  Please contact the program chairpersons by 1 May if you would like to propose a session topic for this conference.

For additional information, please contact the program chairs, Tanja Fransen at [email protected] or 406-228-2850 and Michael Ferrari at [email protected].   Planning committee members Renee Curry ([email protected]), Klaus Wolter ([email protected]) and Andrew Freedman ([email protected]).
