Seventh Annual CCM Forum: Certified Consulting Meteorologists

Call for Papers

The theme for the 2014 AMS Annual Meeting is “Extreme Weather—Climate and the Built Environment: New perspectives, opportunities, and tools.” Herein, we broadly define weather and climate extreme events to include, but not be limited to, severe storms, tornados, tropical cyclones, floods, winter storms, drought, temperature extremes, derechos, aircraft turbulence, wildfires, extreme solar activity, and ocean-land responses (e.g. storm surges, landslides, debris flows). Our society is a “built environment,” increasingly connected by cyber, energy, water, transportation, health, social, and other infrastructures—one that interacts with the natural environment through ecosystem functions supplied by wetlands, barrier islands, etc. The sustainability of this built environment and stewardship of our natural ecosystems are clearly related to quality of life. The theme is designed to explore the aforementioned “focal point” combining scientific inquiry, technological advances, societal implications, and public awareness through the lens of past, current, and future extreme weather and climate events.

Two sessions are being planned for the forum. Session 1, entitled, “Extreme Weather Consulting Opportunities: Before During and After the Events” will consist of invited papers, a panel discussion and a poster session with the following being covered:

Before: Topic Paper will focus on the opportunities consulting meteorologists have to help prepare for extreme weather.  This will include the design of large scale infrastructure such as dams, flood diversion canals, levees, always the way down to engineering materials and resistant home designs.  Also included are the activities to predict extreme event characteristics and their return times.

During: Topic paper will focus on the consulting opportunities which extreme events are occurring.  This will include forecasting opportunities immediately proceeding an event (E-7 days), while the event is impacting the area of interest (E-2 DAYS to E+1 DAY). Also addressed will be nowcasting and specific impacts of control infrastructure.

After:  Topic paper will focus on the consulting opportunities after the extreme events.  This will include damage assessments in the days and weeks that follow. Specifically on opportunities to assess damage to hydrological infrastructure, food infrastructure, transportation infrastructure and operations, communications, power grids, and recovery commodity flow to impacted areas

These three invited papers will be followed with a discussion by a panel of experts addressing the role of consulting meteorologists in extreme weather events and issues raised by the audience.

Session 2, entitled, “Extreme Weather Tools for the Private Sector: Current and Future Tools – Needs and Realities and Satisfying the Growing Demand”, will focus on two aspects of private sector meteorology as it relates to extreme weather namely current state of tools and the role of the CCM community.

For this session, the first topic area will start with invited paper on the current state of tools used to forecast extreme weather and the advances in observations, modeling, and applications that can be explored and considered in the future.  This presentation will be followed by an open discussion with a panel of experts on this same topic

The second topic area will follow the same format with invited paper and an open discussion with a panel of experts on of how the CCM community can help meet the demand to promote scientific inquiry, technological advances, societal implications, and public awareness related to extreme weather events.

The session is designed to also accommodate posters.  CCM may submit posters on the any of the topic areas for the poster session.  Submissions will be accepted from active CCMs and students.  Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the session. To foster student participation, awards are available for the student submittals.   The winning student posters will be displayed as part of the CCM poster session.  The student poster competition is open to students enrolled in a degree granting institution majoring in any of the hydrometeorological sciences.
