Seventh Symposium on Aerosol–Cloud–Climate Interactions

The 7th Symposium on Aerosol–Cloud–Climate Interactions will organize sessions related to the impacts of air pollution and natural aerosols on clouds, precipitation, circulation, and radiation, and in turn how these processes affect aerosols. The Symposium will include invited and contributed oral and poster sessions.  It will provide a forum to review current research status on this subject, identify research needs, define research priorities and new research approaches, and facilitate dialogue among atmospheric chemists, physicists, and meteorologists to tackle research challenges in this important mutli-disciplinary field.

Papers on all aspects of aerosol-cloud-climate interactions are solicited, with emphases on the following topics:

  • Soil dust: Lofting and transport, characterization, and interactions with clouds and storms (organized joint with the Atmospheric Chemistry Conference, organized by Ottmar Moehler, KIT)
  • Marine aerosols: Sources, chemistry, clouds, and climate (joint with the Atmospheric Chemistry Conference and the Air-Sea Interaction (ASI) Conference, organized by Phil Rasch, PNNL and Nicholas Meskhidze, NCSU)
  • Human alteration of climate: Engineering, ethics and politics (joint with Weather Modification, organized by David Mitchell, DRI and Trude Storelvmo, Yale)
  • Chemistry, aerosol, clouds, weather and climate in Asia (organized by Zhanqing Li, Univ of Maryland)
  • Aerosol formation and physicochemical properties (organized by Sonia Kreidenweis, CSU)
  • Impacts of aerosol-cloud interactions on radiation (organized by Jun Wang, Univ of Nebraska – Lincoln)
  • Impacts of aerosols on storm dynamics, cloud physics, and precipitation (organized by Wei-Kuo Tao, NASA GSFC and Susan C. van den Heever, CSU)
  • Aerosol impacts on shallow clouds (organized by Yangang Liu, BNL and Robert Wood, University of Washington)
  • Aerosol impacts on cirrus clouds (organized by Xiaohong Liu, Univ of Wyoming and David Mitchell, DRI)
  • Parameterizations of aerosol-cloud interactions in regional and global models (organized by Steve Ghan, PNNL and Leo Donner, GFDL)

Student Award Opportunities

The Symposium Organizing Committee will host a student paper competition with award certificates and cash prizes for exemplary undergraduate and graduate student poster and oral presentations. Students must be the first author and presenting their own, original work. Students who wish to be considered for this prize must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstract.
