2015 AMS Annual Meeting

The AMS Energy Committee invites participation from researchers and practitioners who are experienced in and/or are studying the linkages between weather, climate and the energy complex.  Participation may range from practitioner presentations (non-academic) to submission of academic papers and published research.  Papers and posters are invited on all subjects dealing with the energy complex, including observational and theoretical meteorology, modeling, forecasting, and applied studies.   Possible planned session themes include: (a) Weather and the Smart Grid – New applications for Weather in Asset Management, T&D, EE and DR; (b) Weather Fundamentals for Energy Planning with a focus on Data and User Groups; (c) Weather and Climate Applications for Energy Decision Support; (d) Energy Supply/Demand Fundamentals focused on Short Range Forecasting; (e) Energy Supply/Demand Fundamentals focused on Medium/Long Range Forecasting and Climate Assessments; (f) Renewable Energy Applications; (g) Policy Issues for the New Energy Economy; (h) Special Topics in Weather, Climate and  the New Energy Economy and (i)  Applications of high-resolution modeling to utility operations  (j)  Weather data and utilities, supporting emergency operations.   (k) Weather and the Energy – What’s Next?  Tomorrow’s Innovation Underway Today (l) From Measurement to Models – How big weather data is changing the Energy Economy (m) Situational awareness to enhanced communication, how social media across the energy sector.

The planned sessions will cover a breadth of topics; however abstracts in the following areas are particularly encouraged:

• Operational forecast modeling for wind/solar electric generation.
• Medium-range, sub-seasonal and seasonal scale forecast techniques and modeling for energy demand.
• Climate data and modeling applied to long-term renewable energy resource development.
• Software applications linking weather to energy decision support.
• Energy applications for weather/climate data.
• New technologies for the production of renewable energy.
• Energy user experiences with weather/climate data.
• Educating the next generation of energy meteorologists
• Energy applications for weather/climate data
• Big data analytics providing decision support within the energy sector
• Innovative weather data applications and forecasting methodologies within the energy sector
• Social media applications to the energy sector

Participants may also address the changing dimensions of the traditional energy complex (e.g. electricity, natural gas and oil) as well as transformational technologies in the rapidly growing renewable energy marketplace.  The Sixth Conference on Weather, Climate, and the New Energy Economy promises to be an essential experience for those whose work intersects with the energy complex!
