Sponsors and Organizers

The 12th Annual Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems is organized by the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R) Symposium Committee and is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society.

Call for Papers

The theme for the 2016 AMS Annual Meeting is “Earth System Science in Service to Society,” weaves the many parts of AMS into a common core. Emphasizing the academic and research strength of AMS, the theme also connects that research to the benefits that society gains from our science. AMS merges the physical, chemical, and biological study of the Earth with human-centered “domains of action”: (1) Observing, (2) Analysis and research leading to understanding, (3) Modeling and prediction, and (4) Social sciences – how people deal with Earth. “Service to Society” explicitly evokes the integrated and complementary government and commercial enterprise that the AMS has done so much to foster over the last decade.  The 2016 meeting integrates AMS’ proud, nearly 100-year history of making a positive difference in the lives of our citizens by continually communicating the advances of its science research to the public and policy makers.

The symposium will consist of oral and poster presentations with emphasis on how Suomi NPP, JPSS, GOES-R and other new generation operational environmental satellite systems have and will enhance our nation’s ability to observe, predict, and communicate weather and climate data at a new level of fidelity and timeliness.  The symposium addresses capabilities of these new generation satellite systems to improve weather, climate, and other environmental data products; enhance user application and services, and blend and fuse satellite data from multiple sources. These enhanced data products will help civil and emergency personnel better prepare for extreme environmental events in order to save lives and property and to mitigate storm damage.  Please contact the chairpersons (contact information below) by 1 May if you would like to propose a session topic for this conference.  Our 2015 program is viewable at https://ams.confex.com/ams/95Annual/webprogram/11GOESRJPSS.html.

Student Award Opportunities

The JPSS and GOES-R Symposium Committee of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) is proud to award Best Student Prizes. These awards recognize student contributions based on an evaluation of both the submitted written paper and corresponding oral or poster presentation. Students are asked at the time of the abstract submission if they want to be considered for such awards.
