Sponsors and Organizers

The Fourth Symposium on the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise is organized by the AMS Commission on Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise and is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society.

Call for Papers

As a contribution to the overall 2016 AMS Annual Meeting theme, the Fourth Symposium is soliciting papers and panel discussions on the following topics:

  • Enterprise Topics around a Weather-Ready Nation
  • Emerging Services within the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise
  • Challenges in Meeting Water Needs for Cities in the World’s Developing Nations (tentatively a Joint Session with the Conf on Hydrology)
  • Innovative partnerships across the weather, water and climate enterprise between US and Asia

Under the auspices of the proposed theme, the AMS Commission on Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise invites presentations on a broad range of topics of interest to the government, private, academic, and other user communities. Within this broad range, we are requesting topics that will have or will have the potential to impact the weather and climate enterprise broadly over the academic, private, and government sectors.  Special emphasis should be placed upon providing information that highlights outcomes and strategic vision on topics that are relevant to today’s evolving scientific, budgetary or societal community issues.  Topics and themes should incorporate interactions between sectors including lessons gained, success stories and/or areas of concern for the professions related to the general AMS membership and beyond to various user communities. In many cases, the best format for these proposed topics is through a panel discussion as to allow for broad participation among the AMS community.

Improving Communication of Threats to the Public

Emerging Services within the Weather, Water and Climate Enterprise

Other Joint Sessions

Challenges in Meeting Water Needs for Cities in the World’s Developing Nations (tentatively a Joint Session with the Conf on Hydrology):

The challenges in meeting the water needs for cities in developing nations are many and complex. The issues include economic, engineering and institutional barriers impeding acquisition and conveyance of sufficient water supply, sanitation of water resources, and waste-water management in the context of rapid population growth. These issues are especially severe for residents of crowded urban slums who are often exposed to unsafe water supplies and other water-related hazards. Risks are further exacerbated by extremes and changes in weather and climate, as well as by international trans-boundary water resources management issues. The AMS Community could provide support via promoting improved information including more skillful and expanded forecasting capabilities of droughts and floods; e.g., the Hydrological Ensemble Prediction Experiment (HEPEX), and applications of other products and services, to targeted areas.

Special Joint Session on US-International Partnerships, Part I: Innovative Academic/Public/Private Partnerships Within and Across Economic Sectors between US and Asia (e.g., financial, insurance, transportation, agricultural, health, energy, etc.)
