The Second Symposium on High Performance Computing for Weather, Water, and Climate is organized by the AMS Board on Environmental Information Processing Technologies and is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society.

Call for Papers

      The theme for the 2016 AMS Annual Meeting, “Earth System Science in Service to Society”, weaves the many parts of AMS into a common core. Emphasizing the academic and research strength of AMS, the theme also connects that research to the benefits that society gains from our science. AMS merges the physical, chemical, and biological study of the Earth with human-centered “domains of action”: (1) Observing, (2) Analysis and research leading to understanding, (3) Modeling and prediction, and (4) Social sciences – how people deal with Earth. “Service to Society” explicitly evokes the integrated and complementary government and commercial enterprise that the AMS has done so much to foster over the last decade. The 2016 meeting integrates AMS’ proud, nearly 100-year history of making a positive difference in the lives of our citizens by continually communicating the advances of its science research to the public and policy makers.  

      Papers for this conference are solicited on such topics as evolving interconnects to improve performance/decrease latencies (which affect large models); use of cloud systems to promote "elastic" systems for model runs; cloud storage techniques to improve the concept of data locality; use of software defined, on-demand networks to promote moving large blocks of data on-demand, and under more secure conditions; lessons learned from HPC system compromises, and how to prevent them; tuning codes for HPC improvement (including conversion of code to take full advantage of Phi or GPU accelerators; and visualization of large data volumes.

Student Award Opportunities

The EIPT Committee is pleased to offer a student paper competition with awards for exemplary student poster and oral presentations.  The HPC symposium will award cash prizes and a certificate from AMS for first, second, and third places to first author students presenting their own original work. Both graduate and undergraduate students can apply for the competition. Students who wish to be considered for the completion must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstracts.  

The HPC symposium welcomes abstracts on the topics of: cloud systems and cloud storage techniques, the use of on-demand network, tuning codes or evolving interconnects to improve HPC performance, and the visualization of large data volumes.
