The Sixth Conference on Transition of Research to Operations is organized by the AMS Board on Environmental Information Processing Technologies and is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society.

Call for Papers

The theme for the 2016 AMS Annual Meeting, “Earth System Science in Service to Society”, weaves the many parts of AMS into a common core. Emphasizing the academic and research strength of AMS, the theme also connects that research to the benefits that society gains from our science. AMS merges the physical, chemical, and biological study of the Earth with human-centered “domains of action”: (1) Observing, (2) Analysis and research leading to understanding, (3) Modeling and prediction, and (4) Social sciences – how people deal with Earth. “Service to Society” explicitly evokes the integrated and complementary government and commercial enterprise that the AMS has done so much to foster over the last decade.  The 2016 meeting integrates AMS’ proud, nearly 100-year history of making a positive difference in the lives of our citizens by continually communicating the advances of its science research to the public and policy makers. 

The 6R2O conference supports the 2016 AMS theme of connecting research to societal benefits by seeking papers describing recent advances in technology, science, and applications that will support the Nation’s ability to provide more accurate weather, water, and climate information to customers around the world.  The conference will be organized around these three topics.  In addition, the 6R2O Conference supports the national imperative for the effective and efficient transition of research into sustained operations.

The 6R2O Committee is seeking abstracts in topic areas such as:

  • Advances in satellite observations and Earth science and advances in observing technologies to help evolve more science in service to society
  • Advances in CubeSats and SmallSats to Improve Earth Science, Weather Forecasting and Climate monitoring
  • Commercial capabilities enabling the transition of research into operations
  • Earth science product and algorithm improvements for weather, water, climate
  • Role of calibration/validation for transitions of research to operations
  • Societal health applications related to the detection of vector-borne and water borne diseases
  • Weather modeling and data assimilation to provide the science to serve society
  • Weather, water, and climate testbeds to enable and accelerate transitions of Research to Operations for public use.
  • U.S. and International Research to Operations and Common Applications Partnerships

Joint Sessions

Because the research to operations transition theme extends broadly across many disciplines, the 6R2O Conference will partner in several joint sessions with other conferences at the 96th AMS Annual Meeting.  A few of these joint sessions are described below. 

Themed Joint Session: Perspective and Plans for Future Observing Systems in Earth System Science (Joint between the 13th Conference on Space Weather, the Fourth AMS Symposium on the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA), the 12th Annual Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, the 20th Conference on Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for the Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface (IOAS-AOLS), and the Sixth Conference on Transition of Research to Operations)

 Themed Joint Session: Research to Operations: Transitioning from Science to Service (Joint between the 32nd Conference on Environmental Information Processing Technologies, 11th Symposium on Societal Applications: Policy, Research and Practice, Sixth Conference on Transition of Research to Operations, and the Board of Broadcast Meteorology)

Themed Joint Session: The Impacts, Successes and Gaps of Current Observing Systems in Earth System Science (Joint between the 20th Conference on Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for the Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface (IOAS-AOLS), the 13th Conference on Space Weather, and the Sixth Conference on Transition of Research to Operations)

Themed Joint Session: Weather Information at Our Fingertips (Joint between the 32nd Conference on Environmental Information Processing Technologies and the Sixth Conference on Transition of Research to Operations) 

6R2O will also partner with the Board on Global Strategies (BGS) in a special session on U.S. and International partnerships called:  Advancing and Leveraging Research into Operations, and Operations Feedback into Research Between and Among International Partners.  This session supports the overall meeting theme by presenting real-world examples of earth system science serving the world’s societies. It will demonstrate progress, challenges and opportunities to improve the transition of research into operations and applications across the global weather, water and climate enterprise.  For any questions, please contact the session co-chairs:  Ken Carey ([email protected] or John Pereira ([email protected]).

6R2O will partner with the 7th Conference on Environment and Health to host a session on Oceans (Satellites) and Human Health.  Since the development of remote sensing indicators for cholera, our ability to measure ocean chemistry and circulation changes has improved our predictive ability of Earth and aquatic/human health interactions so that science in service to society applications have clearly evolved. This session will explore how current or needed technologies and methodologies (including big data processing) can improve complex phenomena modeling accuracy and support. Student Award Opportunities

The 6R2O Committee is pleased to host Student Presentation Awards at the 96th AMS Annual Meeting.  Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best Student (undergraduate or graduate) oral and poster presentations. Students who wish to be considered for these awards should indicate so when submitting the abstract. In order to be considered for an award, the Student must be the lead and presenting author. The basis for an award will be a.) Originality of the work, b.) Applicability to near-term or projected transition of research-to-operations, and c.) Quality of the presentation and its delivery.

In addition, students who want to be considered for travel support by AMS must indicate so when submitting the abstract.  If the abstract is selected for presentation, you may be asked to submit a justification for travel funds.  Further details will be posted on the AMS website.
