In keeping with the 2017 AMS Conference theme of “Observations Lead the Way“, the Sixteenth Annual Colour of Weather theme is “Seeing Ourselves in Others”.
Just as we value high-quality observations in science, and are wary of how biases can comprise our understanding of the environment; we should be equally attentive to eliminating biases in how we see each other.
Too often our professional decision-making is limited by a perceived ‘otherness’ that we ascribe to people who do not look like us. “Seeing Ourselves in Others” helps us build stronger organizations that take advantage of the diverse skills we all bring to the table. Undertaking this task is especially important given the increased divisiveness that appears to characterize our Nation in current times.
