The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA.  We are the world’s only research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto.

LASP combines all aspects of space exploration through our expertise in science, engineering, mission operations, and scientific data analysis. As part of CU, LASP also works to educate and train the next generation of space scientists, engineers and mission operators by integrating undergraduate and graduate students into working teams. Our students take their unique experiences with them into government or industry, or remain in academia to continue the cycle of exploration.

This year's partners include two additional CU Boulder organizations - CIRES (Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences) and ATOC (Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences).

At CIRES, a partnership of NOAA and CU Boulder, hundreds of environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people's relationship with the planet.

The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) at the University of Colorado Boulder provides a world-class, interdisciplinary research and educational environment to examine the dynamical, physical, and chemical processes that occur in the atmosphere and ocean. A major theme is the establishment of a physical basis for observing, modeling, and understanding climate and global change.

Met Office is the UK's National Meteorological Service. Our supercomputer, currently Europe’s largest environmental supercomputer, underpins all our activity. It continually ingests enormous volumes of observational data, assimilates this and generates new data.  Our supercomputer is leading to scientific improvements, which have grown the volumes of data generated and stored to around 200 – 250TB per day.

Meanwhile, our ‘Big Data Drive’ continues to transform how our data is accessed and disseminated.

Major, planned changes are being tested and implemented as part of a phased pathway that includes providing all users with greater access to our data; giving users the opportunity to sample, experiment and evaluate the use of our weather and climate data for their application and service offerings.

Four of our data models are now accessible on the cloud for sandbox experimentation. Our aim is to make our data even more useful, and help our customers realise the opportunities that meteorological data provides.

The Division of  Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) is the National Science Foundation's (NSF) section that focuses on extending intellectual frontiers in atmospheric and geospace sciences by making responsible investments in fundamental research, technology development, and education that enable discoveries and help attain a prosperous and sustainable future.

AGS Supports fundamental research regarding physical, chemical, and biological processes that impact the composition and physical phenomena and behavior of matter between the sun and the surface of the Earth. That includes a wide variety of important processes that impact humans and society, such as space weather events, tropospheric weather events, climate, and air quality. Because these processes can span a wide array of intellectual ground, AGS partners with other programs within Geosciences and across NSF Directorates, and with other federal agency partners, to help ensure that we are funding the best possible science.

Transformative science is often enabled and extended by state-of-the-art observational instrumentation and associated infrastructure, and the most capable computational hardware and software. Observational tools and infrastructure is supported by the individual programs at the relatively small scale, through the Geospace Facilities (GF) program, the Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities (LAOF), and through our support of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), one of NSF's Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDC).

Most climate scientists are convinced that observed global warming is caused by greenhouse gases. Political leaders are now planning to spend trillions to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Are we sure that reducing greenhouse gas emissions will reduce global warming? Greenhouse-gas warming has never been demonstrated by experiment. Carbon dioxide does not absorb enough heat to warm air or Earth. Since 1945, greenhouse gas emissions rose at ever increasing rates. Meanwhile, annual average temperatures changed very little from 1945 to 1970, rose 0.6 oC from 1970 to 1998, changed very little from 1998 through 2013, and began rising nearly 5 times as fast in 2014. The footprints of climate change etched throughout the geologic record show very clearly that rapid warming typically occurs within years, slow cooling occurs incrementally over millennia, and sequences of warming and cooling are very erratic but occur, on average, every few thousand years? What is going on?

As environmental policies become stricter and extreme weather events become the norm, actively measuring and tracking the aerosols in the atmosphere can provide key insights to improve forecast accuracy and timeliness. Developed for NASA in 1997 to measure aerosol, cloud vertical structure, and boundary layer heights, the Sigma Space Micro Pulse LiDAR (MPL) is a portable LiDAR scanning system that operates unattended 24/7/365. The real-time atmospheric mapping data from MPL, empowers scientists, meteorologists and air quality professionals with an understanding of the small particles in our atmosphere that make a big impact on our environment and health.
