The 22nd Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology, 14th Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, and Sixth AMS Symposium on the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) are collectively referred to as the 2018 AMS Joint Satellite Conference.
A Joint Program Committee is soliciting abstracts and presentations describing how satellite-derived environment observations, lead the way towards enhanced scientific understanding, improved forecast skill, and more environmentally-informed decision making for meteorological, oceanographic, climatological and other environmental problems. Today, constellations of environmental satellites range in size from large assets costing billions of dollars to “U-class” miniaturized devices that cost a small fraction of that amount. Topics include:
Radio Spectrum Role in Meteorology and Hydrology
The organizers are additionally interested papers that relate to communicating the importance of the various phases of the environmental observation lifecycle:
Student Paper Awards
$100 Undergraduate, Poster; $100 Graduate Poster; $100 Undergraduate, Oral; $100 Graduate, Oral
An independent 3-person committee, to be selected by the 22nd Conference on SatMOC co-chairs, will evaluate and recommend winners of the student award ($100 each) based on an assessment of the oral presentations. Four criteria will be used for posters and orals: (1) Originality and depth of research accomplished; (2) Quality of oral presentation by student; (3) Quality of slides or poster for presentation; (4) Quality of Extended Abstract submitted no later than 30 days post conference. If feasible, the contribution of the student in designing the research problem and conducting the work will also be assessed. Each criterion will be graded out of 10, and the committee will confer on a winner. The abstract will need to have been submitted to a session in which 22nd Conference on SatMOC during the primary conference.
Student Travel Awards
Our goal of providing a travel allowance is to encourage students who may not otherwise be given the opportunity to attend the Annual Meeting or to present at 22nd SatMOC. The support can in part cover their travel and serve as an incentive for the students’ advisors to send them to the Annual Meeting. After the abstract deadline has passed, the 22ndSatMet Co-Chairs will evaluate and recommend 2 winners of the partial travel support award of $200 per award. The originality of the study and the quality of the written English in the abstract will be used as criteria. The abstract will need to have been submitted to a session in which 22nd SatMOC is the primary conference.

The Speed Networking Event allows students and early professionals to network with mentors via ‘speed networking’, similar to ‘speed dating’, where the mentors (meteorology professionals) roam between tables at set intervals introducing the students and early professionals to a wide array of professions in the field of meteorology. The speed networking will be followed by a social with light hors d'oeuvres, proving a great time for open networking. This allows the students and the mentors of their selected discipline to have extended conversations after their speed-mentoring
introductions.
