Culture Survey Extended
Have you taken the AMS Culture Survey? The survey will allow the Society to understand people’s experiences with equity, inclusion, and justice (EIJ) at the AMS. The survey should take 10 to 15 minutes of your time. Since we've received such great input thus far, the Culture Survey will remain open until 11 October.

Policy Connections and Entrepreneurship
In September, members of the AMS Community participated in the 2023 Geoscience Congressional Visit Days (GEO-CVD). This collaborative effort between AMS, AGU, GSA, and SSA, is held annually in Washington, D.C., and helps build relationships between the scientific community and Congressional offices.

AMS Summer Policy Colloquium alumni Tamara Battle and Rhonda Plofkin, along with Diana Roman and Allison Chartrand, spent their day on Capitol Hill visiting the offices of U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Glenn Ivey of Maryland.

The AMS Policy Program is also initiating an NSF-funded project to solicit and synthesize input from the AMS community on innovation and entrepreneurship. We are interested in your ideas on how to foster a thriving geosciences ecosystem that takes advantage of well-funded innovation opportunities. Give us your input through the special portal below!

“When I was in high school, I got a chance to do a summer internship at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Portland, Oregon. At the time, I wasn't particularly interested in meteorology, but my other choice of internship was in the Transportation Department in the City of Longview, which was much too close to my dad's civil engineering subject matter for my taste. That summer cemented meteorology as a career path for me. I found that it was the perfect amalgamation of mathematics, science, and computing all coming together to address real-world issues."
—Tim Whitcomb (Naval Research Laboratory), whose BAMS article describes a cloud-based, real-time tropical cyclone ensemble forecast system that executed multiple storms and disseminated forecast results via social media. Read more of his interview in your
