The 33rd Conference on Weather Analysis and Forecasting and the 29th Conference on Numerical Weather Prediction solicit papers and posters from the research and operational weather forecasting communities. The theme for the 105th Annual Meeting is “Towards a Thriving Planet: Charting the Course Across Scales.” We encourage participants to consider how their research and applications relate to this broader theme and tailor their submissions accordingly. Submission topics include:
Weather Analysis and Forecasting:
Meso- to subseasonal scale meteorological phenomena
Forecasting tools and techniques across weather scales
Topic-specific forecast techniques (e.g., aviation, fire weather)
Observational and NWP tools to facilitate decision support services, including social media
Advances facilitated by new observational platforms and capabilities
New techniques for disseminating forecasts (new SPC outlooks and graphics, etc.)
The necessity of null: a session dedicated to null results (session to be created later)
Numerical Weather Prediction:
Model development and application
Updates on global and mesoscale models
Improving model performance and efficiency
New or improved parameterizations
Local applications of regional models
Regional climate downscaling approaches and short-range climate prediction
Forecast verification methods and performance
New ensemble generation or probabilistic-based forecasting techniques
Community Proposed Topics:
Verification of Short-Term CAM Thunderstorm Forecasts
Authors are welcome to submit papers on the full range of topics solicited above, in addition to other cross-cutting applications that blend WAF/NWP topics with other areas of research or applied science. The addition of joint sessions with other conferences and symposia beyond those explicitly listed above is likely based on the variety of abstracts received. We especially welcome submissions from the private sector and operational forecasters from outside of the United States.

Student Award Opportunities
Student Presentation Awards
The 33rd Conference on Weather Analysis and Forecasting (WAF)/29th Conference on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) is proud to provide outstanding student presentation awards at the AMS 105th Annual Meeting. Monetary awards of up to $100 will be distributed for oral presentations and poster presentations in addition to a PDF certificate from AMS. Students must be enrolled at a college or university at the time of submission and must be the lead author or presenter of the work. Submitters should indicate their eligibility for student awards when submitting their abstracts. Award recipients will be informed of the committee's decision by mid-February 2025.
Student Presenter Travel Allowance
The 33rd Conference on Weather Analysis and Forecasting (WAF)/29th Conference on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) is awarding four (4) travel grants of $580 each to allow student presenters to attend the AMS 105th Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA 12-16 January 2025. To apply, students (Undergraduate and Post-Graduate) should prepare a short-written statement (no more than one page) declaring their financial need and circumstance, relevance of their research to the conference, how they will benefit from attending the conference and a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Students who wish to apply must submit their application to the program chairs via email with the subject line “AMS 105th Annual Meeting - Student Presenter Travel Allowance Application”: Kim Wood ([email protected]), Katie Magee ([email protected]), and Eddie Wolff ([email protected]).
