The 38th Conference on Climate Variability and Change is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Climate Variability and Change.

The science of climate variability and change encompasses a broad range of space and time scales and brings together a variety of interrelated disciplines. We welcome submissions on all scientific aspects of climate variability and change, including observational, theoretical, and modeling-based approaches.

Call for Papers

We particularly encourage submissions to the following themed sessions:

  • A session honoring Mark Cane’s legacy and reflecting on the future of climate science
  • Atmospheric Rivers: Processes, Impacts, and Communicating Uncertainty
  • Cities and Climate Change
  • Communicating Climate Change Uncertainty to the Public
  • Earth system predictability across timescales for informed decisions and societal resilience at the community level
  • El Niño Southern Oscillation: Dynamics, Prediction and Projection
  • Explaining Extreme Events from a Climate Perspective
  • Frontiers in Earth System Modeling

Student Award Opportunities

1. Travel Award
The committee is pleased to offer two (2) Student Presenter Travel Allowances of $500 each to attend the AMS 105th Annual Meeting in New Orleans from 12 to 16 January 2025. The Student Presenter Travel Allowance is designed to help offset expenses relating to registration fees, transportation costs, food, and lodging for students presenting posters or oral papers. To apply, students should prepare a short written statement (no more than one page) declaring their financial need and circumstance, the relevance of their research to the conference, how they will benefit from attending the conference, and a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Travel allowance applications are due 1 November 2024 and should be submitted to [email protected] and [email protected]. Students selected to receive the travel allowances will be notified by 15 November 2024.

2. Student Award Opportunities
The 38th Conference on Climate Variability and Change is also sponsoring a competition for students to showcase their own original research in climate science. Judging criteria include scientific rigor, presentation quality, and overall impact. The competition will grant first and second place cash prizes to 4 winners, with $100 for 1st and 2nd place in both oral and poster presentations. To be eligible, participants must meet these criteria:

  • Enrolled in a university (undergraduate or graduate) at the time of presentation
  • Serve as the lead author and presenter of the research
  • Express intent to compete while submitting the abstract.
