The First Conference on Fire Weather, Technology, and Risk (FireWx1) is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Wildfire Weather, Technology, and Risk (CWWTR).

Wildland fires are increasing in size and intensity, are highly destructive, cause fatalities of firefighters and residents, devastate large areas, significantly impact air quality, and cause billions of dollars in property and environmental damage annually. Federal, state, local, and tribal governments seek improved weather and climate information, risk assessment tools, and predictive guidance on wildland fire behavior for making tactical and strategic decisions for wildland fire prevention and management.

The FireWx1 Conference will promote collaboration, bring together stakeholders, elicit input, and coordinate community feedback regarding critical fire weather, air quality, and weather and climate risk issues facing wildland fire practitioners. The CFWTR is organizing this conference in recognition of the importance of cross-sector collaboration and knowledge sharing. FireWx1 will be a platform for scientists, practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders to share new research, exchange insights and best practices related to wildfire weather, risk assessment, and management.

Student Award Opportunities

Student Presentation Awards

The First Conference on Fire Weather, Technology, and Risk is proud to provide outstanding student presentation awards. Monetary awards of up to $200 will be distributed for oral presentations and poster presentations in addition to a PDF certificate from AMS. Students must be enrolled at a college or university at the time of submission and must be the lead author or presenter of the work. Submitters should indicate their eligibility for student awards when submitting their abstracts. Award recipients will be informed of the committee's decision by mid February 2025.

Student Presenter Travel Allowance

The First Conference on Fire Weather, Technology, and Risk is awarding two (2) travel grants of ($200) each to allow student presenters to attend the AMS 105th Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA 12-16 January 2025. To apply, students (Undergraduate and Post-Graduate) should prepare a short written statement (no more then one page) declaring their financial need and circumstance, relevance of their research to the conference, how they will benefit from attending the conference and a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Students who wish to apply must submit their application to the program chairs via email with the subject line “AMS 105th Annual Meeting - Student Presenter Travel Allowance Application”: Craig Clements ([email protected]), Lisa Kriederman ([email protected]), and Brian D’Agostino ([email protected]).
