The Fourth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by AMS Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecasting.

Background

The Fourth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation is an opportunity to share information about innovations and recent developments that advance community Earth system model capabilities. Topics reflect upon the motivation and processes by which the community can work together to explore, validate, and integrate advances in weather and climate prediction frameworks. Presenters from public, private, and academic sectors are encouraged to discuss how community modeling initiatives can contribute to improving weather and climate forecasting products and services.

Call for Papers

Papers for the Fourth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation are solicited on the following:

    • Advancing Data Assimilation: Community Innovations Towards Accelerating Implementation of Novel Capabilities in Numerical Weather Prediction Modeling
    • Improving Representation of Processes in Earth System Models for Weather and Climate to Address Systematic Biases
    • Earth System Model Governance and Community Building
    • Community Earth System Model Development
    • Earth Systems Innovation for Community Modeling
    • Innovative Community Infrastructure for Earth System Models
    • The Earth Prediction Innovation Center: empowering the community to improve weather forecasting systems
    • Other Topics in Community Modeling and Innovation

    Joint Sessions

    • The Earth Prediction Innovation Center to Accelerate Community-Developed Scientific and Technological Enhancements into the Operational Applications for Numerical Weather Prediction (Joint with the 15th Conference On Transition Of Research To Operations (15R2O))
    • High Performance Computing and other Innovative Computing Approaches for Community Earth System Models (Joint with the 11th Symposium on High Performance Computing for Weather, Water, and Climate)

    Student Award Opportunities

    Student Presentation Awards

The Fourth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation is proud to provide outstanding student presentation awards. Monetary awards of up to $150 will be distributed for oral presentations and poster presentations in addition to a PDF certificate from AMS. Students must be enrolled at a college or university at the time of submission and must be the lead author or presenter of the work. Submitters should indicate their eligibility for student awards when submitting their abstracts. Award recipients will be informed of the committee's decision by mid February 2025.

    Student Presenter Travel Allowance

The Fourth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation is awarding one travel grant of $645 to attend the AMS 105th Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA 12-16 January 2025. To apply, students (Undergraduate and Post-Graduate) should prepare a short written statement (no more than one page) declaring their financial need and circumstance, relevance of their research to the conference, how they will benefit from attending the conference and a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Students who wish to apply must submit their application to the program chairs via email with the subject line “AMS 105th Annual Meeting - Student Presenter Travel Allowance Application”: Dr. Jose-Henrique Alves ([email protected]), Dr. Neil Jacobs ([email protected]), and Dr. Hendrik L. Tolman ([email protected]).

Deadline for applications: 1 November 2024

Recipients will be notified on or before: 15 November 2024
