Solving the data challenge, from supercomputer to end user

Our meteorological activities are underpinned by enormous data volumes, continuously ingested by the world’s largest operational environmental science supercomputer, then assimilated and new data generated.  Our new Cray supercomputer will lead to improvements to our science, which will further grow the volumes of data being generated and stored. By March this year, Met Office expects to produce 200 – 250TB per day and store 1.2 exabytes of data by 2018, that’s more bits of data than there are grains of sand on the world’s beaches.

Our ‘Big Data Drive’ will ultimately transform how our data is being accessed, disseminated and stored. Major, planned changes are being researched, tested and implemented.  Our aim is to make our data more useful and realise the opportunities that our data provides for our customers.

The Division of  Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) is the National Science Foundation's (NSF) section that focuses on extending intellectual frontiers in atmospheric and geospace sciences by making responsible investments in fundamental research, technology development, and education that enable discoveries and help attain a prosperous and sustainable future.

AGS Supports fundamental research regarding physical, chemical, and biological processes that impact the composition and physical phenomena and behavior of matter between the sun and the surface of the Earth. That includes a wide variety of important processes that impact humans and society, such as space weather events, tropospheric weather events, climate, and air quality. Because these processes can span a wide array of intellectual ground, AGS partners with other programs within Geosciences and across NSF Directorates, and with other federal agency partners, to help ensure that we are funding the best possible science.

Transformative science is often enabled and extended by state-of-the-art observational instrumentation and associated infrastructure, and the most capable computational hardware and software. Observational tools and infrastructure is supported by the individual programs at the relatively small scale, through the Geospace Facilities (GF) program, the Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities (LAOF), and through our support of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), one of NSF's Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDC).

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA.  We are the world’s only research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto.

LASP combines all aspects of space exploration through our expertise in science, engineering, mission operations, and scientific data analysis. As part of CU, LASP also works to educate and train the next generation of space scientists, engineers and mission operators by integrating undergraduate and graduate students into working teams. Our students take their unique experiences with them into government or industry, or remain in academia to continue the cycle of exploration.
