Preliminary Agenda

The AMS Short Course on Interacting With Radar Data in The Cloud will be held on the 22nd January 2017 preceding the 97th AMS Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington.

With data sets becoming ever-larger efficient storage and use of cloud platforms have become essential to allow our science to scale to the level of the data. Within the climate programs of the department of energy sensors are trending towards collecting petabyte data sets annually and even when compressed the NOAA NEXRAD data set is petabyte scale.

This course will enable users to use the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud to interact with radar and other data sources. With the recent agreement between NOAA and AWS the entire archive of the Next Generation Radar Network (NEXRAD is available as a public dataset on Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) allowing rapid on demand access https://aws.amazon.com/noaa-big-data/nexrad/.

To new users using this resource can be daunting. This one-day course will break down the barrier by combining the knowledge of scientists at Argonne National Laboratory (who lead the Python-ARM Radar Toolkit project) and experts at Amazon. The course will provide a fast track for users getting them set up with a working instance in Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) that contains all the relevant software for collecting, mapping and gaining insight from NEXRAD and observations from the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM). Attendees are expected to be competent at using their own laptops. Knowledge of some scripting language is highly desired and Python knowledge is a plus but not assumed.

The course, which will be held at Amazon in Seattle (nearby the conference center), will be led by:

Scott Collis, Argonne National Laboratory. He will be assisted by Jonathan Helmus from Argonne, Ryan May from Unidata and Mark Korver and Jed Sundwall from Amazon.
