Lightning! It's All About Static Electricity!
In Arizona, desert brush and forests can be ignited by lightning strikes leading to catastrophic wildfires. This activity will demonstrate how lightning comes about in a simplified and easy-to-understand way. Participants will catch "fish" using a "charged" balloon fishing pole. How many fish will you catch on your pole? Lightning safety tips will be highlighted. All participants will receive a weather sticker!

The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS), Founded in 1998, provides a great platform for communities around the country to participate in "hands-on" science right in their own backyards through the daily observation of precipitation. Volunteers of all ages measure rain, hail and snow using simple low-cost rain gauges and hail pads. These observations are then collected and made available on the CoCoRaHS Web site: www.cocorahs.org. These data are used daily by many federal, state and community organizations and businesses. Through consistent observation and data sharing, participants actively learn about their climate, their water resources and the impacts precipitation has on their lives and their communities.
The CoCoRaHS Network currently engages over 19,500 volunteer observers in communities across all fifty states, Puerto Rico, Canada and soon the Virgin Islands. The network currently has over 450 active volunteers in Arizona. If you would like to report how much rain has fallen in your back yard, we would love to have you as a volunteer observer. To sign-up for CoCoRaHS visit: www.cocorahs.org and click on "Join CoCoRaHS". It's lots of fun and only takes five minutes a day.

The Science Directorate at NASA Langley Research Center provides many opportunities to involve students, faculty, researchers, and the citizen science community in real world science.
Our goals include inspiring the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professionals and improving STEM literacy by providing innovative participation pathways for educators, students, and the public.
The
Students' Cloud Observations On-Line (S'COOL) Project is one such pathway! Particitants make and report cloud observations to NASA for validation of the CERES instrument. Observations contribute to our better understanding of how clouds affect the Earth's weather and climate.
MY NASA DATA, another NASA Langely eduaction and outreach program, is a data visualization tool, making NASA Earth Sceince data accessible and easy to use.
Stop by The NASA Langley Sceince Directorate Booth and see how you can join the fun!
