GATE, the Global Atmospheric Research Program's (GARP) Atlantic Tropical Experiment, took
place 50 years ago. It was by far the most ambitious tropical field campaign, involving more than
5,000 scientists, technicians, and supporting staff from 72 countries. GATE observations have
had an unmatched legacy in atmospheric science. At the 104th AMS Annual Meeting, the GATE
50th Anniversary is celebrated through a town hall meeting, a luncheon, and three scientific
sessions. The celebration includes GATE veterans who share their experiences in planning and
executing the field program, and speakers who reflect how their careers were influenced by
GATE, and how other tropical field experiments followed GATE’s footprints to advance the
science of tropical atmospheric convection and air-sea interaction. Visions and planning of future
tropical field experiments will also be discussed. The GATE 50th Anniversary Celebration is co-
sponsored and co-hosted by the NOAA Climate Program Office, the AMS 22nd History
Symposium, and the AMS 12th Symposium on the Madden-Julian Oscillation and Sub-Seasonal
Monsoon Variability.
