The New Age of Urban Meteorology: How Data is Transforming the Science of Cities

(Joint with Fourth Symposium on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, 25th Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry, 23rd Symposium on Meteorological Observation and Instrumentation)

Session 5: Wednesday, 11 January 2023, 10:45-12:00 PM MT

Colorado Convention Center - Mile High Ballroom 2B/3B

The study of urban meteorology is a decades-old endeavor. However, researchers in the field never had access to the large swathe of spatiotemporally rich data available today. This Presidential Session will consider how this data deluge can usher in a new age of urban meteorology research with actionable initiatives leading to airshed improvement. This session focuses on answering the question from four angles: (i) new sources of data consisting of unorthodox sensing techniques and unconventional information sources (e.g., social media, web searches); (ii) novel ways of leveraging these data to create an understanding using approaches such as machine learning and reduced models; (iii) insights these data can provide on urban inequity arising from policies such as redlining, (iv) methods to integrate these data and information to support urban planning, equitable policy, and integrated services. We bring four distinguished scientists to discuss these themes and provide their vision for future data-enabled urban science.
