William Hooke Symposium

No Earth system scientist stands alone: separate and removed. Rather, we are a community of practice with the core purposes of advancing knowledge and using that knowledge for the benefit of humanity and all life. This symposium celebrates and, more importantly, seeks to build on Bill Hooke's remarkable career and contributions to science and the broader public that we serve.  

The Bill Hooke symposium will explore and integrate four dimensions of Bill’s professional contributions: 1) his work on deeply challenging societal issues of grave importance to humanity (wicked problems); 2) deep commitment to ensuring the expanding capabilities of science are used for the direct benefit of humanity (natural hazards and societal engagement); 3) his transformative impact through enabling others to define, develop, and achieve their core purposes (mentorship); and 4) his foundational commitment to weaving ethics, values, and a commitment to service through science and the pursuit of knowledge and understanding (philosophy, values and spirituality).

The symposium will feature an outstanding group of people who benefited from and carry forward Bill’s legacy. Come add your effort to the cause and your voice to the harmony!

Roger Pielke Sr Symposium

This symposium will celebrate and honor Professor Roger A. Pielke Sr. for his distinguished career over half a century as a researcher, educator, and leader in atmospheric science and related fields. As one of the most accomplished atmospheric scientists in the world with an H-index of 100, he is the authority on the understanding and modeling of land surface impact (e.g., land cover and land use change, surface heterogeneities) on weather and climate, the co-developer of the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), the author of the most popular textbook on mesoscale meteorological modeling, and a pioneer in interdisciplinary science. He has also provided exceptional service to our field, including three Chief Editor positions that require substantial time commitments (including AMS Monthly Weather Review and Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences).
