2016 AMS Annual Meeting

The is proud to award six student prizes at the Student Award Opportunities.   These awards recognize outstanding student contributions based on an evaluation of both the submitted written paper and corresponding oral or poster presentation.

The encourages abstract submissions from students. Students presenting their own, original work as first authors are eligible to participate in the competition for the best oral and poster presentations.

Partial travel support (of up to $550 each) and two prizes (of $200 each) will be awarded in recognition of outstanding abstracts and oral presentations at the IOAS-AOLS conference.

1. Full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at a University
2. Lead author, personally presenting the work,
3. Submission of an abstract to a session in which IOAS-AOLS is the lead conference

The student needs to indicate whether they wish to be considered for travel support and/or the best student paper prize. For those who are requesting partial travel support, in addition to the above conditions, the IOAS-AOLS co-chairs will review the abstract to determine how their work meets one or more of the following focus areas:

1. Observing Systems: atmosphere, ocean and land surface, in situ and remote.  Comparisons with other observing systems.
2. Data Assimilation:  New developments in methodology; research and operational applications on all spatial and temporal scales.
3. Numerical analysis and prediction experiments involving observations: data impact and observation sensitivity tests.
4. Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs).
5. Field Experiments: observational and assimilation results.

The two awards for the best oral presentation will be selected based on the originality and depth of research accomplished; the quality of the oral presentation; and the quality of the slides in the presentation.

The 18th Conference on Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry gives awards to the best student presenters in both oral presentation and poster presentation categories.  Cash prizes and a certificate from AMS will be awarded to outstanding first author presentations given by undergraduate and graduate students presenting their own original work. Students who wish to be considered for this prize must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstract.

Measurements Committee Student Travel Awards

The AMS Measurements Committee is offering $400 travel awards for up to three student AMS members who are presenting papers/posters at the meeting.  The award is to be used for travel expenses to and from the conference and lodging in New Orleans, LA.  Funding is available to both graduate and undergraduate students, but is limited to one award per educational institution.  Furthermore, the awardee may not receive any concurrent travel support from the AMS (e.g., an AMS travel grant).  The selected students will be required to pay for any travel up-front, and be reimbursed by AMS (Gillian Peguero, [email protected]) after the conference with proper receipts.

To apply, students should prepare a short written statement (no more than one page) declaring their financial need and circumstance, relevance of their research to the conference, and how they will benefit from attending the conference.  Applicants should also provide a copy of their abstract for the meeting.  Applications should be sent in pdf format via email to the conference chair: Bruce Baker ([email protected]).   Applications will be accepted through October 1, 2015 and selected students will be notified around the end of  November 2015.  Interested applicants or questions about the award should contact the conference Chair.  The measurements committee will evaluate and vote for student award winners based on these written statements with names/affiliations removed.

Student Awards

1. Student Awards will be given for the two best student papers (oral or poster) presented at the 18^th SMOI.  Student presenters are encouraged to identify yourself as a student and have your presentation recorded so that your paper can be considered by the committee.   Two awards of $150 will be given.  The Measurements Committee will attend student paper presentations (or review them online when they become available) and each member will then cast 2 votes for the best papers taking into consideration: scientific merit, contribution to the field of Instrumentation and Observations as well as presentation skills.  Award winners will be notified by the program chair after the annual meeting.
2. The Robert Leviton Student Prize is presented for the best student paper on the development or evaluation of atmospheric instrumentation or unique measurement techniques. The Committee on Measurements will submit a recommendation to the STAC Commissioner, who approves the recommendation. To be considered for the prize, an entrant should either be enrolled as a full-time student or be a student who has just completed a degree but has not yet begun employment at the time the paper is given or submitted for publication. The prize, an AMS reference book, $300, plus a certificate, was established to recognize Robert Leviton, who devoted nearly his entire professional career to endeavors related to the measurement of wind, temperature, pressure, and humidity in the atmosphere. He was one of the pioneers in reducing large datasets from radiosondes using a computer.

The AMS measurements committee will review all student presentations and posters at the Symposium and provide an evaluation to the committee chair.  The chair will tally votes provided by the committee members to distribute this award.  In the event of a tie, the committee will vote on the finalists.

Students presenting their own, original work as first authors are eligible to participate in the competition for the best oral and poster presentations.  Students may also apply for partial travel support.  Please mark on the abstract submission that you are a student in order to be considered for the competition. The JPSS and GOES-R Symposium Committee of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) is proud to award Best Student Prizes. These awards recognize student contributions based on an evaluation of both the submitted written paper and corresponding oral or poster presentation. Students are asked at the time of the abstract submission if they want to be considered for such awards.

The 11^th Symposium on Societal Applications: Policy, Research and Practice is proud to announce that it will make awards at the AMS Annual Meeting to recognize outstanding student contributions based on the evaluation of poster and oral presentations made during Symposium-led sessions.  
 
Contenders for the award must be:

- Enrolled at a University (either at undergraduate or graduate level),
- The lead-author, and
- Personally make the presentation of his/her work.

A student who wishes to be considered for this prize should indicate this when submitting his/her abstract.
  
Previous winners of this prize are not eligible.
 
The deadline for submission of abstracts to the Symposium (see AMS website for details) is 17 August 2015.

The Symposium Organizing Committee will host a student paper competition with award certificates and cash prizes for exemplary undergraduate and graduate student poster and oral presentations. Students must be the first author and presenting their own, original work. Students who wish to be considered for this prize must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstract. 

The Seventh Conference on Weather, Climate, and the New Energy Economy values student participation. As we have done in the past, we will have awards for best student oral presentations and best student posters to encourage student participation. Presentations will be judged based on scientific content and effectiveness of communication.

Student Award Opportunities

The Board on Environment and Health is pleased to be able to offer presentation and travel awards to participating students of the 96^th Annual AMS meeting. Student Presentation Awards:

Four (4) presentation awards, in total, will be extended to the top student presenters (undergraduate and graduate) participating in the Seventh Conference on Environment and Health. The awards include a $75 award and certificate of achievement from AMS. Students will be graded by board members, using a standardized rubric, where the highest cumulative scores will receive an award. Students should express interest in participating in the competition immediately after submitting their abstract. Award announcements will be made by the middle of February, 2016 after the conference

Student Travel Awards: 

To encourage the participation of young scientist in the AMS conference, travel awards will be available to students participating in the Seventh Conference on Environment and Health. Two (2) undergraduate awards are available for $250, and two (2) graduate awards worth $350 are available to assist with the expenses of participating in the conference. Interested parties should note these awards will be processed after the conclusion of the conference in a ‘reimbursement’ fashion. To be eligible, students must participate in the Seventh Conference on Environment and Health, and must be a current student in good academic standing (e.g. not on probation or disciplinary action for grades or conduct). Award decisions will be made by the Board’s conference planning committee based on perceived need and the student’s qualifications. The 6R2O Committee is pleased to host Student Presentation Awards at the 96th AMS Annual Meeting.  Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best Student (undergraduate or graduate) oral and poster presentations. Students who wish to be considered for these awards should indicate so when submitting the abstract. In order to be considered for an award, the Student must be the lead and presenting author. The basis for an award will be a.) Originality of the work, b.) Applicability to near-term or projected transition of research-to-operations, and c.) Quality of the presentation and its delivery.

In addition, students who want to be considered for travel support by AMS must indicate so when submitting the abstract.  If the abstract is selected for presentation, you may be asked to submit a justification for travel funds.  Further details will be posted on the AMS website.

The MJO Symposium Organizers are pleased to offer need-based travel grants for students. They will also conduct a competition for the most outstanding student papers from both posters and oral presentations. Students must enter the competition when they submit their abstract and they must be presenting their own work as first author.

The EIPT Committee is pleased to offer a student paper competition with awards for exemplary student poster and oral presentations.  The HPC symposium will award cash prizes and a certificate from AMS for first, second, and third places to first author students presenting their own original work. Both graduate and undergraduate students can apply for the competition. Students who wish to be considered for the completion must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstracts.  

The HPC symposium welcomes abstracts on the topics of: cloud systems and cloud storage techniques, the use of on-demand network, tuning codes or evolving interconnects to improve HPC performance, and the visualization of large data volumes.
