Call for Papers

The theme for the 2016 AMS Annual Meeting is “Earth System Science in Service to Society,” weaves the many parts of AMS into a common core. Emphasizing the academic and research strength of AMS, the theme also connects that research to the benefits that society gains from our science. AMS merges the physical, chemical, and biological study of the Earth with human-centered “domains of action”: (1) Observing, (2) Analysis and research leading to understanding, (3) Modeling and prediction, and (4) Social sciences – how people deal with Earth. “Service to Society” explicitly evokes the integrated and complementary government and commercial enterprise that the AMS has done so much to foster over the last decade.  The 2016 meeting integrates AMS’ proud, nearly 100-year history of making a positive difference in the lives of our citizens by continually communicating the advances of its science research to the public and policy makers.

The Major Weather Impacts of 2015 is a one day session that takes place on Tuesday.  The session specifically focuses on the weather/climate/water events of late 2014 and 2015 including:

• How did the significant event impact a community or entire region?
• What were the economic impacts that occurred due to the significant climate/weather/hydrology events? 
• What new techniques, tools and procedures helped warn/inform the public? 
• What lessons were learned that can help others in the future in forecasting, preparing/responding to the event and communicating the message?

The Major Weather Impacts of 2015 may include, but not be limited to, severe storms, tornados, tropical cyclones, floods, winter storms, drought, temperature extremes, aviation impacts from weather, wildfires, extreme solar activity, and ocean-land responses (e.g. storm surges, landslides, sea ice, debris flows).   A brief meteorological review of the event is permissible, but the content needs to focus mostly on the actual societal impacts, and how new tools that improve the forecast and dissemination of information in a major event. 

The themes for the session are developed as the year’s events occur.  Past themes included US and global weather impacts, flooding, fire weather and drought, panel discussions on major events, aviation weather events, solar events and severe weather.  

Note:  Authors need to contact the chairperson prior to submission for agenda planning purposes and to balance the number of invited speakers and submitted abstracts.  Submit the abstract into general session area, and they will be moved by the program chairs into themes prior to finalizing the session.
