Sponsors and Organizers

The 30th Conference on Hydrology is organized by the AMS Committee on Hydrology and is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society.

Call for Papers

The theme for the 2016 AMS Annual Meeting, “Earth System Science in Service to Society”, weaves the many parts of AMS into a common core. Emphasizing the academic and research strength of AMS, the theme also connects that research to the benefits that society gains from our science. AMS merges the physical, chemical, and biological study of the Earth with human-centered “domains of action”: (1) Observing, (2) Analysis and research leading to understanding, (3) Modeling and prediction, and (4) Social sciences – how people deal with Earth. “Service to Society” explicitly evokes the integrated and complementary government and commercial enterprise that the AMS has done so much to foster over the last decade.  The 2016 meeting integrates AMS’ proud, nearly 100-year history of making a positive difference in the lives of our citizens by continually communicating the advances of its science research to the public and policy makers.

Papers for this conference are solicited on advances in hydrology and hydrometeorology, both from a scientific and operational perspective.  Topics of interest include:  Hydrometeorological extremes; Drought analysis and prediction; Flood prediction, analysis, decision support, & management; Hydrometeorological applications, products and services; Advances in evaporation and evaporative demand; Remote sensing applications in hydrology; Land data assimilation techniques and systems; Integrated metrics and benchmarking for next generation hydro/land surface modeling of the water cycle; Land-atmosphere interactions; Water resources:  forecaster to water manager – impacts; Regional climate modeling; and Precipitation processes and observations for atmospheric, land surface, and hydrological modeling.

Joint Sessions

Joint sessions are planned with the 28th Conference on Climate Variability and Change; 20th Conference on Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for the Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface (IOAS-AOLS); 11th Symposium on Societal Applications:  Policy, Research, and Practice; and the 22nd Conference on Applied Climatology; the Fourth Symposium on the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise; and 14th Conference on Artificial Intelligence.  There will also be a joint special session on US-International Partnerships: Joint Research and Coordinated Observations in Hydrometeorology, Extremes and High-Impact Events in the US and Asia, co-hosted by the AMS Board on Global Strategies, the Chinese-American Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (COAA), and the AMS Committee on Satellite Meteorology.

Also of interest are hydrological studies and applications that otherwise connect to the general theme of the 96th Annual AMS Meeting: “Earth System Science in Service to Society”

Student Award Opportunities

The Hydrology Committee is pleased to once again offer need-based travel grants and a student paper competition with awards for exemplary student poster and oral presentations.  For more information concerning student travel grants and student paper awards, please contact the conference chairpersons.
