AMS is offering Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts ages 10 and up an opportunity to earn the Weather-Ready Nation patch at this year’s Annual Meeting.
The program will teach Scouts about meteorology and give them an understanding of the weather phenomena in the Phoenix area. The program will also introduce Scouts to weather-related emergency preparedness.
All Scouts—both boys and girls—will be learning aspects of meteorology and emergency management to become better prepared for weather-related natural disasters. Scouts will engage in one-on-one activities with professional meteorologists from the National Weather Service and the local media, atmospheric science researchers, and local emergency managers. During this program, Scouts will learn how to interpret symbols on a weather map, discover the differences between various weather alerts and how the public receives them, discuss what items need to be in an emergency kit, determine ways families and communities can be prepared in the event of a weather emergency, and more.
