Student Award Opportunities
Many conferences offer travel awards as well as award certificates and cash prizes for the best student oral and poster presentations at the conference. Check the list below for specifics for each conference.
- 29th Conference on Hydrology
The Hydrology Committee is pleased to once again offer need-based travel grants and a student paper competition with awards for exemplary student poster and oral presentations. For more information concerning student travel grants and student paper awards, please contact the conference chairpersons.
- 27th Conference on Climate Variability and Change
The Committee on Climate Variability and Change will conduct a student poster competition for students who enter when they submit their abstracts. Students must be the first author of the poster and presenting their own, original work.
- 20th Conference on Planned and Inadvertent Weather Modification
Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best student presentations (oral or poster) at the conference. There will be awards for a best student presentation award ($200), a 2nd place student presentation award ($150) and a 3rd place student presentation award ($100). Students must be the first author and presenting their own, original work. Students who wish to be considered for this prize must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstract.
- 20th Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography, 11th Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, and Third AMS Symposium on the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA),
The AMS environmental satellite conference student award program will be held at the 2015 Annual AMS meeting. The focus will be on conceptual, research, operations, and practical applications of polar-orbiting and geostationary satellite data supporting our Nation’s safety, health, and prosperity through meteorology, climatology, oceanography and other environmental science. The planning committee will award Best Student Presentations Prizes, recognizing outstanding contributions from both undergraduate and graduate students. Each symposium will provide an independent 3-person ‘subject matter expert’ committee will evaluate and recommend winners of the student award ($200 to best poster and $200 to best oral presentation) based on an assessment of the oral presentations. Four criteria will be used for posters and orals: (1) Originality and depth of research accomplished. (The contribution of the student in designing the research problem and conducting the work will be assessed); (2) Quality of oral presentation by student; (3) Quality of slides or poster for presentation; (4) Quality of Extended Abstract submitted no later than 30 days post conference. Each criterion will be graded out of 10, and the committee will confer on a winner. The abstract will need to have been submitted to sessions within one of the 3 titled symposiums.
Contenders for the award will have to:
- Be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at a College or University
- Be the Lead author, presenting the work
- Submit an extended abstract
After the abstract deadline has passed, the 20th SatMet Co-Chairs will evaluate and recommend 2 winners of the partial travel support award of $550 per award. The originality of the study and the quality of the written English in the abstract will be used as criteria. The abstract will need to have been submitted to a session in which 20th SatMet is the primary conference.
All students that submit an abstract to one of the symposiums will receive an invitation to the Student and Invited Speakers Reception on Monday night of the AMS Annual Meeting.

- 19th Conference on Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface (IOAS-AOLS)
Partial travel support (of up to $550 each) and two prizes (of $200 each) will be awarded in recognition of outstanding abstracts and oral presentations at the IOAS-AOLS conference.
To be eligible for apply for an award, each student applicant must meet the following conditions:
1. Full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at a University
2. Lead author, personally presenting the work,
3. Submission of an abstract to a session in which IOAS-AOLS is the lead conference
The student needs to indicate whether they wish to be considered for travel support and/or the best student paper prize. For those who are requesting partial travel support, in addition to the above conditions, the IOAS-AOLS co-chairs will review the abstract to determine how their work meets one or more of the following focus areas:
1. Observing Systems: atmosphere, ocean and land surface, in situ and remote. Comparisons with other observing systems.
2. Data Assimilation: New developments in methodology; research and operational applications on all spatial and temporal scales.
3. Numerical analysis and prediction experiments involving observations: data impact and observation sensitivity tests.
4. Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs).
5. Field Experiments: observational and assimilation results.
The two awards for the best oral presentation will be selected based on the originality and depth of research accomplished; the quality of the oral presentation; and the quality of the slides in the presentation.
- 19th Conference on Air-Sea Interaction
The 19th Air-Sea Interaction Conference will host a student paper competition for both oral and poster presentations. Cash prizes and a certificate from AMS for first and second places will be awarded to first author students presenting their own original work. Both graduate and undergraduate students can apply for the competition. Students who wish to be considered for the completion must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstracts.
A networking reception is planned for registered students, invited speakers to Air-Sea Interaction (ASI) sessions, and the AMS ASI committee.

- 17th Conference on Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry
The 17th Conference on Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry gives awards to the best student presenters in both oral presentation and poster presentation categories. Cash prizes and a certificate from AMS will be awarded to outstanding first author presentations given by undergraduate and graduate students presenting their own original work. Students who wish to be considered for this prize must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstract.

- 17th Conference on Aviation, Range and Aerospace Meteorology (ARAM)
The Aviation, Range, and Aerospace Meteorology (ARAM) committee of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) is proud to award a Best Student Prize at the 17th Conference on Aviation, Range, and Aerospace Meteorology held 4 – 8 January 2015 in Phoenix, Arizona. This award recognizes outstanding student contributions based on an evaluation of both the submitted written paper and corresponding oral or poster presentation. See further details on award flyer.
- 13th Conference on Artificial and Computational Intelligence and its Applications to the Environmental Sciences
Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best student (undergraduate or graduate) oral and poster presentations at the conference. Students who wish to be considered for this prize should indicate that when submitting their abstract. The AMS Committee on Artificial Intelligence is also offering small travel awards for student AMS members who are presenting papers at the conference. You can apply for this by submitting an email to the chair describing your need, linking to your abstract, and a verification of your student status.
- The 13th History Symposium
$700 will be available as a travel award to a student giving an orla or poster presentation. Program chairs will choose the winner based on submitted abstracts and will notify the winner directly.
- 12th Conference on Space Weather
The AMS Committee on Space Weather is proud to announce some wonderful student opportunities available:
Travel Funding Assistance for Students:
Applications are currently being accepted for a student travel award to attend and present at the 12th Conference on Space Weather, which will be held 5-7 January 2015, as part of the 95th AMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ. One travel award will be given to help defray the cost of attending the conference. The selected student will be reimbursed by AMS after the conference with proper receipts. To be eligible, applicants must be Student Members of the American Meteorological Society and enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program at the time of the application.
To apply, collect in a single PDF document the following:
1. Presentation abstract.
2. One paragraph statement of why you wish to attend the meeting
3. Statement of commitment to attend the meeting if you are awarded the travel award.
4. Letter of recommendation from your advisor.
5. Contact information
The application PDF is submitted to Prof. Richard Clark ([email protected]) with the subject line "Space Weather Travel Award Application" for evaluation by members of the AMS Committee on Space Weather.
Applications must be received by 8 August 2014 to be considered. Decisions will be made by 29 August 2014.
Awards for Best Poster and Oral Presentations:
Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best student oral and poster presentations.
Contenders for the award will have to:
1. Be the Lead author and presenting the work
2. Indicate on their abstract submission that they wish to be considered for student competition.
3. Submission of an abstract to a session in which Space Weather is the lead conference.
- 10th Symposium on Societal Applications: Policy, Research and Practice
The 10th Symposium on Societal Applications: Policy, Research and Practice is proud to announce that it will make awards at the AMS Annual Meeting to recognize outstanding student contributions based on the evaluation of poster and oral presentations made during Symposium-led sessions.
Contenders for the award must be:
- Enrolled at a University (either at undergraduate or graduate level),
- The lead-author, and
- Personally make the presentation of his/her work.
A student who wishes to be considered for this prize should indicate this when submitting his/her abstract.
Previous winners of this prize are not eligible.
- Seventh Symposium on Aerosol–Cloud–Climate Interactions
The Symposium Organizing Committee will host a student paper competition with award certificates and cash prizes for exemplary undergraduate and graduate student poster and oral presentations. Students must be the first author and presenting their own, original work. Students who wish to be considered for this prize must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstract.

- Seventh Symposium on Lidar Atmospheric Applications
The Seventh Symposium on Lidar Atmospheric Applications is proud to announce its’ student oral/poster presentation competition. This competition is geared to challenge the student’s ability to clearly inform the audience on their research involving atmospheric measurements using a lidar. Lidars can be used for many atmospheric measurements such as the study of ozone, temperature, aerosols, cloud formation, wind, water vapor and etc.
To be eligible for the competition you must be a student and you must have an accepted abstract to the annual conference. There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner.The Awards will be as follow:
1st place $200
2nd place $175

- Sixth Conference on Weather, Climate, and the New Energy Economy
The Conference values student participation. As with the previous two conferences, we will have awards for best student oral presentations and best student posters to encourage student participation.
- Sixth Conference on Environment and Health
In an effort to encourage young scientists to enter our field, and to support professionalization of graduate students, student travel allowances will be granted to two undergraduate students ($250 each) and two graduate students ($350 each). Interested students should submit a formal request for support that justifies their need and describes their interest in attending the meeting (one page maximum) to Austin Stanforth at [email protected] by 1 October. Please note that graduate applications will limited to those from presenters of accepted oral or poster presenters. Winners will be notified by 15 October.
In addition, four prizes (of $75 each) will be awarded in recognition of outstanding poster and oral presentations given by undergraduate and graduate students.
- Fifth Symposium on Advances in Modeling and Analysis Using Python
The symposium planning committee is proud to award a Best Student Paper Prize at the 2015 AMS Python Symposium. This award recognizes outstanding student contributions based on an evaluation of a submitted written paper and a corresponding oral or poster presentation. More Information
- Fifth Conference on Transition of Research to Operations
Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best student (undergraduate or graduate) oral and poster presentations at the conference. Students who wish to be considered for this prize should indicate that when submitting their abstract.
- Third Symposium on Prediction of the Madden–Julian Oscillation: Processes, Prediction, and Impact
The Symposium Organizing Committee will host a student paper competition with award certificates and cash prizes for the best student poster presenter and the best student oral presenter. Students must be the first author and presenting their own, original work. Students who wish to be considered for this prize must indicate their eligibility when submitting their abstract.
The Symposium Organizing Committee is also offering small travel awards for students from small institutions in the US and from the developing world are often not able to attend because of limitations in financial resources. Students will need to apply for the travel allowance while submitting their abstract. They will have to present evidence of their need. Preference will be given to first time attendees. Students can apply for the travel allowance by submitting an email to the chairs describing your need, linking to your abstract, and a verification of your student status.
