The 13th Conference on the Meteorological Application of Lightning Data is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the Committee on Atmospheric Electricity. 

Call for Papers

The 13th Conference on the Meteorological Application of Lightning Data is now soliciting
abstract submissions from the AMS community. This year features an expanded list of topics
with an increased emphasis on multi-disciplinary joint sessions with aligned AMS conferences
and symposia, and a variety of session types including panel discussions and a new session of
short-form talks where authors exhibit their collected lightning imagery or videos and discuss the
physical phenomena evident therein.


Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Relationships between thunderstorm kinematics, microphysics, and lightning
  • Global lightning observations and lightning climatologies
  • Advances in lightning observation technologies and data processing techniques
  • Transient Luminous Events (TLEs)
  • Lightning data applications for operational meteorology
  • Other topics in the meteorological application of lightning data

Joint Sessions

  • Lightning safety and hazards to the public, including gatherings, aviation, and fire weather
  • Weather and lightning simulations, and data assimilation with lightning data
  • The Global Electric Circuit and electrical connections across the Sun-Earth-Space system
  • Multi-domain uses of geostationary lightning measurements and their value to the weather enterprise broadly

Student Award Opportunities

Student Presentation Awards

The 13th Conference on the Meteorological Application of Lightning Data is proud to provide
outstanding student presentation awards at the AMS 107th Annual Meeting. Monetary awards
of $150 for first place and $100 for second place will be distributed for both oral presentations and poster presentations in addition to a PDF certificate from the AMS. Students must be
enrolled at a college or university at the time of submission and must be the lead author or
presenter of the work. Submitters should indicate their eligibility for student awards when
submitting their abstracts. Award recipients will be informed of the committee's decision by mid-
February 2027.
