The Fourth Symposium on the Future of Weather, Forecasting, and Practice is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecasting. This 3-day symposium will be held between 11-13 January 2027 at the 107th AMS Annual Meeting in Denver, CO.
Prospective participants are encouraged to review each session topic to determine the best fit for their work.
Call for Papers
The Fourth Symposium on the Future of Weather, Forecasting, and Practice is soliciting papers and posters from the research and operational weather and climate forecasting community on the following topics:
Research to Operations: Advancing Weather Research and Social Science into Forecast Applications
Topics including but not limited to:
Successful R2O case studies highlighting the use of a forecast system, novel observing system, decision support tool, or methodology during extreme or high-impact weather events, including:
Winter weather
Fire weather
Severe thunderstorm events
Hydrometeorological events
Hurricanes
Drought
Case studies highlighting upgrades to experimental or operational numerical weather prediction systems (e.g., MPAS, RRFS)
Novel operational verification frameworks, including ensemble verification, object-based verification, and verification for rare or high-impact events
Tools and methods that improve communication to at-risk communities for both short- and long-term weather hazards and climate impacts
The Evolving Weather Enterprise: Strengthening Partnerships for Improved Forecasts and Services
Topics including but not limited to:
Examples of successful public–private collaboration in numerical weather prediction (NWP) development, observational network support, or the advancement of weather forecast information services
Opportunities for collaboration between the public and private sectors to advance observing networks, forecasting systems, and hazard communication
Utilization of private-sector observations and sensor networks in public-facing weather tools and applications
Challenges facing R2O and Operations-to-Research (O2R) efforts within the public–private interface
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Weather Forecasting:
Topics including but not limited to:
Development and operational deployment of AI forecast systems
AI-assisted forecasting workflows and decision-support integration
ML post-processing in operations, including data-driven methods for reducing forecast biases
Explainable AI (XAI) for operational forecasting to foster forecaster trust and interpretability
