The 27th Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology.

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) 27th Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography and Climatology (SatMOC) Conference is now planned for 25-29 Jan 2026 as part of the 106th AMS Annual Meeting in Houston, TX.

Prospective participants are encouraged to review the call for papers for each conference to determine the best fit for their work. The conveners plan to build joint sessions and keynote talks into the program to highlight research and work that spans the breadth of the meeting.

The theme for the AMS Annual Meeting is “Fast and Slow Thinking: The Human Factor in a Rapidly Changing World.” The program conveners hope that paper submissions will incorporate this theme and elements to present a shared vision for the future of the community, with a focus on 2030 and beyond.

Students and early career professionals are especially encouraged to submit their work for presentation, even if it is not closely related to the sought topics. The conveners plan to assemble a diverse and inclusive scientific program committee to evaluate the submissions to the program on their merit, respecting the unique roles of academia, government, and industry in our community.

The conveners previously sought topics of interest from the community.

Student and Early Career Professionals Event

The  27th Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology will be co-hosting with other Conferences and Symposia the 12th Annual Speed Networking Event [12SPNE]. The event allows students and early career professionals to network with mentors via “speed networking” where the mentors (meteorology and allied discipline professionals) roam between tables at set intervals introducing the students and early professionals to a wide array of professions in the field of meteorology. The Speed Networking will include a social with heavy hors d'oeuvres, providing a great time for open networking. This allows the students, the early career professionals, and the mentors of their selected discipline to have extended conversations after their speed-mentoring.

Call for Papers

The conveners for the SatMOC conference specifically welcome papers and presentations on the following topics:

  • Advances in Computer Vision for Satellite Meteorology;
  • Fifty Year History of GOES;
  • NASA’s TROPICS Mission: Observing the Tropics with a Constellation of Smallsats;
  • Other topics in satellite meteorology, oceanography, and climatology;
  • Remote Sensing of Air-Sea Interactions and Marine Boundary Layer Processes;
  • Satellite Remote Sensing of the Polar Regions and the Cryosphere;
  • Satellite-Based 3D Cloud Data and Applications for Advancing Weather and Climate Research;
  • The NASA INCUS Mission: Observing Convective Updraft Dynamics and Anvil Properties and Extent;
  • Wildfire Observations from Satellite for Pre-fire, During-fire and Post-fire Applications

Joint Sessions

  • Artificial Intelligence for Satellite Observations (Joint between the 25th Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Science and the 27th Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology);
  • Instruments and Applications of the Future Generation of Geostationary Satellites (Joint between the 22nd Symposium on Operational Environmental Satellite Systems Session, the 27th Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology);
  • Overview and Applications of the Next Generation LEO Satellite Series (Joint between the 22nd Symposium on Operational Environmental Satellite Systems Session, the 27th Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology);
  • National and International Program Overviews for Environmental Satellites (Invited; Joint between the 22nd Symposium on Operational Environmental Satellite Systems Session, the 27th Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology, the 16th Conference on Transition of Research to Operations, and the 14th AMS Symposium on the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation)

Student Award Opportunities

The 22nd Symposium on Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, the 27th Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology, and the 15th Conference on Transition of Research to Operations are pleased to jointly co-host Student Presentation Awards at the 106th Annual Meeting. Award certificates and cash prizes of up to $200 will be given for the best student oral and poster presentations. Students who wish to be considered for these awards should indicate so when submitting their abstract. In order to be considered for an award, students must be enrolled at a college or university at the time of submission and must be the lead and presenting author. Award recipients will be informed of the committee's decision by late February 2026.

The basis for an award will be:

  1. The research topic and impact,
  2. Experimental Design
  3. Interpretation of Results
  4. Quality of the presentation (oral and poster/slides) and the Student’s delivery
