The Fifth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by AMS Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecasting.

Background

The Fifth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation is an opportunity to share information about innovations and recent developments that advance community Earth system model capabilities. Topics reflect upon the motivation and processes by which the community can work together to explore, validate, and integrate advances in weather and climate prediction frameworks. Presenters from public, private, and academic sectors are encouraged to discuss how community modeling initiatives can contribute to improving weather and climate forecasting products and services.

History

The AMS Annual Meeting in 2022 featured the First Symposium on Earth Prediction Innovation and Community Modeling, coordinated by Weather Enterprise and Earth Sciences Community members. The Symposium became an opportunity for the broad research community to share information about the latest developments and how innovations advance community models for Earth prediction applications.

In January 2019, the NCAR and NOAA established a Memorandum of Agreement to co-develop a common modeling infrastructure that would enable broader community engagement in advancing the Nation's weather and climate modeling capabilities for operational and research applications. Sharing infrastructure opens the door to researchers from academia and research laboratories, and national centers to collaborate on developing a community modeling resource. By sharing infrastructure, research innovations are more readily available across these modeling systems, enabling access and the ability to apply these innovations in various contexts and conduct extensive testing.

The overall collaborative process benefits the entire research-to-operations value chain by tapping into a broader wealth of expertise to advance numerical guidance skill, enabling stakeholders to meet their mission requirements.

Call for Papers

We invite abstract submissions for a wide range of topics related to community modeling, innovation, and Earth systems prediction.

Session topics include:

  • Earth System Model Governance and Community Building.
  • Progress Updates and Community Innovations in Data Assimilation for Earth Systems.
  • Verification and Validation of Earth System Models for Weather and Climate Timescales.
  • Community Earth System Model Innovation and Development.
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) for Earth System Modeling Applications.
  • Community Infrastructure and Architecture for Earth System Models.
  • The Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) and Unified Forecast System (UFS): empowering the community to improve weather forecasting systems.

Joint Sessions

The Symposium also welcomes abstracts in the following joint sessions we will co-host:

  • The Earth Prediction Innovation Center to Accelerate Community-Developed Scientific and Technological Enhancements into the Operational Applications for Numerical Weather Prediction (with the 14th Conference on Transition of Research to Operations),
  • High-Performance Computing Support for Earth Innovations and Research in a Community Modeling Framework (with the 10th Symposium on High-Performance Computing for Weather, Water, and Climate).

Student Award Opportunities

Student Presentation Awards

The Fourth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation is proud to provide outstanding student presentation awards. Top-three presentations by students in poster and oral sessions will receive prizes of up to $200 and a certificate from AMS. Students must be enrolled at a college or university at the time of submission and must be the lead author or presenter of the work. Submitters should indicate their eligibility and interest in competing for student awards when submitting their abstracts. Award recipients will be informed of the committee's decision by late February 2026

Student Presenter Travel Allowance

The Fifth Symposium on Community Modeling and Innovation is awarding two (2) travel grants of up to $650 to attend the AMS 106th Annual Meeting, from 25 to 29 January 2026 in Houston, Texas. The award should be used to offset travel related expenses only (registration fees, transportation, lodging and food). To apply, undergraduate and post-graduate students should prepare a short written statement with no more than one page declaring their financial need and circumstance, relevance of their research to the conference, how they will benefit from attending the conference and a copy of their abstract for the meeting. Students who wish to apply must submit their application to the program chairs via email with the subject line “AMS 2026 - Student Travel Allowance Application”, including all of the following recipients Dr. Jose-Henrique Alves ([email protected]), and Dr. Hendrik L. Tolman ([email protected]).

Deadline for applications: 31 October 2025

Recipients will be notified on or before: 7 November 2025
